Phil Bochler
Park Falls Fire and Rescue Department, Park Falls, Wisconsin

Mr. Phil Bochler is currently a National Registered Emergency Medical IV Technician and has been a National Registered Emergency Medical Technician since 1979. He is a member of the Park Falls Fire and Rescue Department and currently serves as the Safety and Training Officer. Mr. Bochler is the Captain of Rescue 1 and the Building Inspector/Safety Director for the City of Park Falls, Wisconsin. He is a certified Wisconsin State Firefighter, Level 2 and a certified instructor for the State of Wisconsin. Additionally, Mr. Bochler is a member of the Price County Local Emergency Planning Committee and currently is serving as the Vice Chairman.

Mr. Bochler serves on the Protective Service Committee for North Central Technical College. In 1998, he hosted a Wisconsin Department of Transportation Pilot Extrication Program. Mr. Bochler also instructs advanced vehicle extrication skills, and problem solving techniques, enabling rescuers to develop the most proficient time saving team approach to safely and quickly mitigate a vehicle rescue. Mr. Bochler is a certified TERC Regional Judge and has judged multiple regional vehicle extrication competitions and learning symposiums throughout the Midwest. Mr. Bochler has instructed and been instrumental in the development of the Tomahawk Fire School since 1989.

Mr. Bochler began his work with
Safe And Fast Extrication, Inc. (SAFE) in 1998 and serves as a SAFE Board Member. He has instructed, on behalf of Safe and Fast Extrication, at the Monroe Fire School. He continues to share his knowledge and experiences with the Medical College of Wisconsin Neuroscience Research Lab (MCW) by participating in a full-scale crash laboratory. Mr. Bochler is currently involved with instructing the Sussex Fire and Rescue Department in new vehicle extrication techniques in an on-going research project with MCW. This training is being provided to reduce their extrication time using safe and fast extrication emergency scene management, strategic and tactical objectives.

Mr. Bochler believes that the tragedies, suffering, and even death can be reduced with improved vehicle extrication research, education, up-to-date technical skills, and controlled emergency scene management. He operates on a passionate level and wholeheartedly wants to save more lives and reduce injuries in crash situations.

Deputy Fire Chief Dwight Clark
Forsyth County Fire Department, Forsyth, Georgia

Dwight Clark is currently employed as Deputy Fire Chief, Operations, for Forsyth County, GA Fire Department. He retired as Assistant Chief in the San Angelo, Texas Fire Department. He instructed fire fighting, rescue and paramedic courses for Concho Valley Regional Hospital, San Angelo, TX. Mr. Clark continued his career in the fire service as Fire Chief in the Travis County Rural Fire Protection District and is certified as a NPQ3 (National Professional Qualifications) Instructor. He also served on the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Rescue Tool Committee from 1993 to 1994.

In 1998, Mr. Clark was a recipient of the Harvey Grant International Award for Excellence in Vehicle Extrication. This prestigious award recognizes an individual who has positively impacted the fire rescue service for his dedication and commitment.

Mr. Clark is a founding member of the Transportation Emergency Rescue Committee (TERC). He participated with the TERC Task Force Committee to research vehicle extrication techniques at the General Motors testing facility located in Milford, MI. He has participated in national, international, and regional competitions and was appointed head judge for several of these competitions. He developed and taught vehicle extrication programs in over seventeen states including, but not limited to, Canada, England, Mexico, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, San Juan, United Kingdom, and South Africa. Dwight also served as the head judge in the 1992 World Vehicle Extrication Competitions and a lead pit judge in the United Kingdom and South Africa.

Mr. Clark is currently writing monthly articles for FireRescue Magazine. In addition, he has written articles for Fire Rescue in the United Kingdom and Tow magazines. He has continued to impact state-of-the-art training for his colleagues and provided guidance to rescuers throughout the world.

Mr. Clark’s enthusiasm for mentoring exemplifies the true spirit of the fire service. He is looked upon by his peers as a visionary. Mr. Clark’s hard work and innovative approach to the fire service has benefited rescuers and victims of vehicle crash entrapments throughout the world…ultimately reducing suffering and saving lives.

Shawn M. Conners
Rockford Fire and Rescue, Rockford, Illinois

Shawn Connors has been a firefighter since 1996, starting his career with the City of Monroe Fire Department.  Currently, he is a full-time firefighter for the City of Rockford Fire and Rescue Department.  Mr. Connors is a certified firefighter in the states of Wisconsin and Illinois and a certified instructor for the State of Wisconsin.  He has instructed at Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois state fire schools and currently is a Fire and Rescue Instructor at the Blackhawk Technical College.  Mr. Connors has been an assistant instructor at the Tomahawk Fire School since 1998 and recently was appointed the lead instructor.

Mr. Connors has developed extrication training classes, which include supplemental restraining systems, vehicle construction, new vehicle construction, principles/techniques and safety guilds for extrication rescuers.  He conducts classes on vehicle extrication at the basic and advance training levels to emergency responders.  Mr. Connors enjoys instructing by using classroom theory and hands-on participation, enabling the responders to develop the most proficient vehicle extrication skills possible to safely mitigate a vehicle rescue.

Mr. Connors began to work with Safe And Fast Extrication, Inc. (SAFE) in 1998.  He continues to participate with the Medical College of Wisconsin Neuroscience Research Lab and SAFE in a full-scale crash laboratory, which is the only such lab in the United States in an academic medical setting.

Mr. Connors continues to support SAFE and leads the way in extrication training, research and development...ultimately saving more lives.

Assistant Fire Chief Daniel Furseth
DeForest Fire and Rescue Department, DeForest, Wisconsin

 

Daniel Furseth has been a firefighter since 1987, starting with the Deerfield Volunteer Fire Department.  In 1999, Daniel joined the DeForest Area Fire and EMS Department.  He advanced to Assistant Fire Chief and currently is a full-time police officer within the community.  Serving as both an Assistant Fire Chief and police officer has given Furseth unique insight and experience as he has encountered many vehicle extrication rescues throughout the year.

Since 1997, Assistant Chief Furseth attends, participates and competes in Transportation Emergency Rescue Committee (T.E.R.C.) regional and international vehicle extrication competitions and learning symposiums.

Officer Furseth has developed and produced a comprehensive vehicle extrication presentation, which includes supplemental restraining systems, vehicle construction, new vehicle construction and extrication techniques and safety for rescuers during post crash rescues.

Mr. Furseth continues to participate and share his knowledge and experiences with the Medical College of Wisconsin Neuroscience Research Laboratory in the crash injury extrication research projects...ultimately helping save more lives.

Michael J. McNamara
Burlington Fire & Rescue Department, Burlington, Ontario Canada

Michael McNamara has 26 years of experience in the fire and emergency rescue services with the Burlington Fire Department, Ontario, Canada. In 1994, he advanced to Captain and serves as an Acting Platoon Chief.

In 1984, the Office of the Fire Marshall of Ontario originated the concept of the International Automobile Extrication Challenge and Learning Symposium. Since its inception and the dedication of individuals like Michael McNamara, extrication challenges are taking place throughout Canada, United States, United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and New Zealand, among many others.

In 1987, Michael McNamara was an extrication team member of the Burlington Extrication Team who participated in multiple extrication challenges and learning symposiums. His professional endeavors lead to organizing a team to compete in vehicle extrication symposiums throughout the world. He has participated in vehicle extrication challenges as competitor, head judge, scoring coordinator, and safety officer in various international, national, and regional challenges throughout the world.

Michael McNamara is a current member of the Transportation Emergency Rescue Committee (hereinafter referred as TERC) and currently serves as the Chairman of TERC Canada. In 1999, TERC Canada was formed and is a continued success in the Provinces and Territories throughout Canada. He participated in a task force that conducted research on current extrication technology in an effort to develop extrication countermeasures for implementing and improving safe and fast extrications. The Ontario Fire Marshals Office conducted this vehicle extrication research.

Michael McNamara attended multiple extrication rescue courses in New York State and Incident Command at Mass Casualty Incidents. He conducted and participated in vehicle extrication seminars throughout the world, such as Vehicle Construction and Safety Systems, Important Developments in Vehicle Extrication, Hybrid and Alternate Fuel Source Vehicle Rescue Considerations.

Michael McNamara continues to consult with communities and professional rescue agencies in upgrading emergency vehicle extrication techniques. He is internationally recognized and considered an extrication specialist in the art of relocating material and providing victims of entrapment with safe and fast extrications. He has been an extremely dedicated, hard working rescuer who is a tribute to the rescue profession.

Mark Meyers
Town of Madison Fire Department, Madison, Wisconsin

Mark Meyers is a certified Firefighter II and Fire Service Instructor by the State of Wisconsin. Currently, he serves as a Fire Investigator and Firefighter/Paramedic for the Town of Madison Fire Department. He is certified as an American Heart Association CPR Instructor, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Hazardous Materials Technician. Mr. Meyers was a former police officer for the Mazomanie, Ridgeway and Black Earth Police Departments. Mark Meyers serves as an Incident Commander and Team Leader for the Town of Madison Fire Department Vehicle Extrication Team. This enables him to keep current on modern vehicle safety and design enabling him to share and interact with the professional rescue personnel throughout the United States.

Mark Meyers continues to share his expertise and knowledge by providing instruction that prepares rescuers to quickly mitigate vehicle extrication of entrapped victims to save time in the “Golden Hour”…ultimately saving more lives. Mr. Meyers continues to participate in ongoing research endeavors between the Medical College of Wisconsin Neuroscience Research Lab (MCW) and Safe And Fast Extrication.

Lieutenant James Olshanski
Brookfield Fire and Rescue Department, Brookfield, Wisconsin

 Lieutenant James Olshanski began his career with the City of Brookfield Fire and Rescue Department in 1990, was promoted to Lieutenant and is currently serving as the Company Officer for station #1. Mr. David Rufer began his career with the City of Monroe Fire and Rescue Department in 1986.  Mr. Rufer has completed the National Fire Academy Safety Officer course and currently serves on the Monroe Fire Rescue Safety Committee.  Mr. Rufer is a member of the City of Monroe vehicle extrication team.  Mr. Rufer is also a certified electrician.

Mr. Rufer has competed in the T.E.R.C. regional competitions such as:  The Great Lakes and Midwest Vehicle Extrication Competitions and Learning Symposiums.  In addition, Mr. Rufer has competed and participated in International Vehicle Extrication Competitions and Learning Symposiums providing interaction with extrication specialists from around the world.  Mr. Rufer has attended multiple vehicle, bus, heavy equipment, and farm extrication courses presented by internationally known extrication specialists.

Additionally, Mr. Rufer is a team member of the Milwaukee Mile Fire Rescue Team.  This team is responsible for fire suppression and vehicle rescue during practices, time trials and vehicle races.

Mr. Rufer also teaches and instructs advance vehicle extrication skills at the Tomahawk Fire School and has taught for multiple years for Safe And Fast Extrication at the Monroe Fire School.  Mr. Rufer enjoys instructing by using advance vehicle extrication team problem solving, enabling the rescuers to develop the most proficient time saving team approach to safely and quickly mitigate a vehicle rescue.

Mr. Rufer, as a trainer for SAFE, currently is involved with instructing the Sussex Fire and Rescue Department in new vehicle extrication techniques in an attempt to reduce their extrication time using safe and fast extrication emergency  management, strategic and tactical objectives.

Mr. Rufer continues to participate and share his knowledge and experiences with the Medical College of Wisconsin Neuroscience Research Laboratory by participating in crash injury extrication research projects.  Mr. Rufer continues to serve as a SAFE board member and supports SAFE's  mission to lead the way in extrication training, research & development....Ultimately increasing rescuer proficiency during a vehicle extrication rescue.

Paul Simpson
Mississauga Fire Rescue Squad,  Mississauga, Ontario, Canada

Paul Simpson has 32 years of experience in the fire, rescue, and emergency medical services with the Mississauga Fire and Rescue Department in Mississauga, Canada. In 1988, he was promoted to Captain and has served for over 16 years with the Mississauga Fire Rescue Squad.

Paul Simpson served as an extrication/fire service instructor for Seneca College where he also developed vehicle extrication training curriculum. Paul Simpson is a current member of the Transportation Emergency Rescue Committee (herein referred to as TERC). Paul is a certified international judge and has judged in multiple vehicle extrication competitions and learning symposiums, regionally, national and internationally. Paul has been requested to speak at vehicle extrication symposiums and has conducted advanced auto rescue seminars in multiple TERC competitions. Mr. Simpson was selected to be the Chairman of the Judges Selection Committee for TERC.

Vehicle extrication competitions and learning symposiums are taking place throughout the world due to the dedication of individuals like Paul Simpson. He has been interacting with professional rescue personnel worldwide and continues to consult with community and professional agencies in upgrading emergency vehicle extrication techniques and services.

Len Watson

Len Watson has 29 years of experience as an operational firefighter, 26 years riding a rescue vehicle covering 23 station patches in London's East End. Len Watson has written several books on rescue and laterally e-books - 'RTC extrication rescue' and 'Crash Rescue' which combine the disciplines of vehicle extrication and in-vehicle pre-hospital trauma care.

Len was one of the three founding members of the charity C.U.E.E.S., which was launched in 1989. Mr. Watson is a supporter of vehicle extrication research and the development of counter-measures for a safe and fast extrications. He enjoys research, education, and developing extrication techniques with diversified extrication specialists throughout the world.

Tom Wehr, President
Wehr Engineering, Fairland, Indiana

Mr. Wehr is the inventor of the GLAS-MASTER and a member of the Who’s Who of American Inventors. He is a fire service instructor in the State of Indiana and is a member of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors. Additionally, he received the Firefighter of the Year award in Shelby County (Indiana) in 1984 for a heroic vehicle rescue. He has over 30 years of experience in engineering and metal work and understands the properties of metals, structural integrity of which can be compromised during vehicle extrications.

In 1999, Mr. Tom Wehr was the recipient of the Transportation Emergency Rescue Committee and International Association of Fire Chief’s “Harvey Grant’s Excellence in Rescue Award,” a prestigious honor recognizing individuals from around the world for their pioneering and contributions to vehicle extrication. He has served as the Manufacturers Chairman of the Transportation Emergency Rescue Committee for the past five years and has been involved in countless International, National, Regional, and World Vehicle Extrication Competitions and Learning Symposiums. He enjoys using his creative talent in video production to capture the rescue team’s educational experiences… both in the crash lab, extrication competitions and learning symposiums.

Mr. Wehr served as a Captain of the Fairland Volunteer Fire Department and was responsible for vehicle extrication training. He instructs vehicle extrication classes which enable rescuers to avoid hydraulic “tunnel vision,” remembering that for every action there is a reaction. He trains rescuers to recognize the “big picture” using state of the art strategic methodology which prepares rescuers to solve and quickly mitigate a vehicle collision with entrapped victims. He is looked upon by his peers as an innovator whose vision, new ideas, and creativity will benefit rescuers and victims of crash entrapments… ultimately saving more lives.

Mr. Wehr has published articles such as “Inverted Noah’s Ark” in Firefighter’s News, June/July, 1996 and the “Wizard of Wehr” in National Fire & Rescue, Jan/Feb, 2002.

Mr. Wehr continues to share his knowledge and experience with the Medical College of Wisconsin Neuroscience Research Lab (MCW) by participating in vehicle extrication research in a full-scale crash laboratory. He enjoys research, education, developing tools and techniques with diversified extrication specialists throughout the world.
